What will future household energy consumption in Pakistan look like? Challenges in accessing advanced energy sources due to the energy transition in rural and urban households
Summary. Pakistan's residential energy consumption relies heavily on biomass, especially in rural areas. This study analyzes household energy use from 1999 to 2020 and forecasts to 2060. Rural households consume more total energy than urban ones but rely on traditional fuels, while urban households use gas and electricity. Cooking dominates energy use across both areas. The energy transition will progress twice as fast in cities as villages, yet rural areas will still lack adequate access to modern energy sources by 2060, creating ongoing policy challenges.
