Contribution of Indigenous Innovations for Mitigating Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda J. E. Smith) among Maize Farmers for Improved Food Security
Summary. Smallholder maize farmers in Kenya have developed indigenous pest management practices to combat fall armyworm, which destroys up to 60% of maize yields. This study surveyed 150 farmers across three counties to document their locally-developed innovations and measure their impact on crop production. Indigenous approaches offer resource-poor farmers effective alternatives to chemical pesticides while preserving natural pest control mechanisms.
