Summary. Rural firms in South Africa are risk-averse and heavily dependent on government support and networks to engage in entrepreneurship and innovation. When external support ends, rural businesses fail. The study argues that government and networks must shift focus toward building independent, sustainable rural entrepreneurs rather than providing temporary assistance.
