Determinants of the Digital Divide in Rural Communities of a Developing Country: The Case of Malaysia

Summary. This study identifies key factors affecting computer usage in rural Malaysian agricultural and fishing communities. Access to computers, community type, ethnicity, education, language, gender, social networks, and age all significantly influence computer adoption. High costs, low literacy, and perceived irrelevance emerge as main barriers. The research demonstrates that the digital divide widens wealth gaps between rural and urban areas and proposes strategies to close this gap in Malaysia.
