Energy-Efficient Multi-Radio Microwave and IAB-Based Fixed Wireless Access for Rural Areas

Anselme Ndikumana, Kim Khoa Nguyen, Adel Larabi, Mohamed Cheriet · 2026 · IEEE Transactions on Green Communications and Networking

Summary. This paper proposes an energy-efficient wireless network architecture for rural broadband access using 5G Fixed Wireless Access combined with microwave and Integrated Access and Backhaul technology. The system dynamically reduces power consumption during low-demand periods and optimizes radio states to balance energy use with data rate requirements. Simulations show the framework delivers wide coverage and high capacity while minimizing energy consumption in multi-hop rural networks.
