Microfinance and the Financing of Investments in Rural Areas
Summary. Microfinance institutions struggle to provide medium and long-term loans needed for rural investment in developing countries. This paper examines West African experience and identifies two solutions: financial cooperatives can expand lending capacity, and stronger coordination between microfinance providers and government policies can improve rural development outcomes.
