Assessment of crop residues for off-grid rural electrification options in Ghana

Summary. Ghana's rural areas lack electricity access for 28% of the population. This study assessed crop residues as a biomass energy source for off-grid rural electrification. Researchers found 29 million tonnes of surplus crop residues could generate 401 petajoules annually. Gasification and combustion technologies produce electricity at $0.29–$0.34 per kilowatt-hour, exceeding current residential tariffs. Despite higher costs, crop residue-based electricity generation remains viable for rural Ghana with financial support.
