Techno-economic-environmental assessment of a hybrid renewable polygeneration system for an off-grid rural health clinic

Zahra Piryaei, Maryam Karami, Mohammad Mahdi Asghari, Fontina Petrakopoulou · 2026 · Next Energy

Summary. Researchers designed and tested a hybrid renewable energy system for an off-grid rural health clinic combining solar collectors, hydrogen storage, and biomass. The system reliably met the clinic's annual electricity and heating needs with minimal energy loss, cost $141,670 over its lifetime, and cut carbon emissions by 85% compared to diesel alternatives. The system also produced oxygen as a medical byproduct, proving that fully renewable energy can work economically for remote healthcare facilities.
