Technology Adoption by Small Urban and Rural Transit Agencies
Summary. A national survey of rural transit agencies receiving federal Section 5311 funding examined technology adoption patterns. Larger agencies with bigger budgets and fleets adopted technologies like automatic vehicle location, scheduling software, GPS systems, and mobile data terminals at higher rates. Manager education, conference attendance, vendor interaction, and training participation significantly influenced adoption decisions. The findings help identify which agencies would benefit from technology investments and reveal unexpected adopters worth studying.
