How Effective is a Self-Help Group Led Microfinance Programme in Empowering Women? Evidence from Rural India
Summary. Self-Help Group microfinance programs in rural India show limited effectiveness at empowering women. Only 13.2% of participating women achieve empowerment overall. While longer membership increases economic and political empowerment, social empowerment remains unaffected. Economic gains alone do not translate into social or political advancement. The programs have potential but cannot drive broader social transformation.
