Spatial differentials in higher education access across rural and urban areas of major states of India

Tusar Kanti Samanta, Jayanta Sen · 2026 · Journal of Education Society & Sustainable Practice

Summary. This study analyzes higher education access across rural and urban areas in major Indian states using National Sample Survey data. The researchers find that while higher education access has expanded significantly over time, substantial regional disparities persist. Southern states demonstrate better access with smaller rural-urban gaps, while eastern states show greater sectoral variations. Spatial inequalities within states remain pronounced, indicating that targeted policy interventions are essential to achieve equitable higher education expansion.
