Space, place, and the politics of access: Service provider perspectives on health system responses to sexual- and gender-based violence in rural communities
Summary. Rural Ontario service providers report that sexual and gender-based violence survivors face fragmented care pathways shaped by geographic distance, institutional constraints, and stigma. Emergency and primary care systems operate on crisis thresholds misaligned with survivor needs. Integrated, place-based care hubs offer promise but lack funding. Access depends on safety, trust, and relational continuity as much as logistics.
