Modeling agricultural innovation in a rapidly developing country: the case of Chinese pesticide industry

Summary. This study examines how policy and market conditions drive agricultural innovation in China's pesticide industry. The researchers find that government policies—including trade liberalization, public research investment, and stronger intellectual property enforcement—encourage local innovation. However, results show mixed effects: expanding market size sometimes increases imitation rather than genuine R&D, and longer patent protection can entrench both legitimate innovators and patent infringers.
