Hybrid renewable energy systems for rural electrification in developing countries: A review on energy system models and spatial explicit modelling tools
Summary. This review evaluates energy modeling tools for planning hybrid renewable energy systems in rural areas of developing countries. The authors assessed 27 models using systematic criteria and identified five with the strongest potential: HOMER and iHOGA for conventional modeling, and GeoSIM, IntiGIS, and OnSSET for geographic information system approaches. They found conventional models excel at technology modeling but lack network analysis, while GIS-based models handle spatial data better but have technology limitations. The study proposes a complementary framework combining these tools to overcome individual gaps.
