Evaluating Off-Grid Energy Solutions for Rural Demand in Brazil – A Case study

Fernando Carvalho Assunção da Silva, Fernando Nunes Belchior, Marcelo Nunes Fonseca, Felipe Lima Aires, Julian David Hunt · 2026 · Latin American Journal of Energy Research

Summary. This study evaluates three energy supply configurations for a rural property in Goiás, Brazil, comparing grid electricity with backup generators, grid electricity with off-grid solar, and grid electricity with solar plus battery storage. Financial analysis using NPV, IRR, payback period, and levelized cost metrics shows that the solar-plus-battery system, despite nine times higher upfront costs, delivers the lowest long-term energy costs and strongest financial returns over 30 years, making it the most viable solution for reliable rural power.
