The Role of Microfinance Institutions in Promoting Financial Inclusion and Reducing Poverty Among Smallholder Farmers in Rural Agricultural Areas

Summary. Microfinance institutions help smallholder farmers in rural areas access financial services that traditional banks deny them. Through microloans, savings accounts, and insurance, MFIs enable farmers to invest in modern agricultural techniques and increase productivity. Group lending and social collateral reduce default rates. However, high interest rates, operational inefficiencies, and limited rural outreach constrain their effectiveness. Public-private partnerships and digital solutions could strengthen MFI impact.
