Design, Experimental Investigation, and Thermodynamic Performance Analysis of a Small-Scale Compressed Air Energy Storage System for Off-Grid and Rural Electrification Applications

Patil Sanket T · 2026 · Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)

Summary. This paper designs and tests a small-scale compressed air energy storage system for rural off-grid electrification powered by solar and wind. The system achieved 50% round-trip efficiency at optimal pressure, with compressor inefficiency and heat losses as main performance limiters. Heat recovery from compression improved efficiency by 4.2 percentage points. The validated results provide a technical foundation for deploying CAES systems in rural India.
