Indigenous Knowledge, Gender and Agriculture: A Scoping Review of Gendered Roles for Food Sustainability in Tonga, Samoa, Solomon Islands and Fiji
Summary. This scoping review examines how gender and Indigenous knowledge contribute to food sustainability in four Pacific Island nations. The authors find that men and women hold distinct, complementary knowledge roles in agriculture, but women's expertise has been marginalized through colonialism and food import dependence. Intergenerational knowledge transmission is declining, yet integrating gendered traditional knowledge into agricultural practices could strengthen climate adaptation and build resilient farming systems.
