China’s Agricultural Productivity: Foreign and Indigenous Innovation Compared
Summary. This study examines how agricultural productivity in China relates to both domestic and foreign technological innovation from 1995 onwards. Using statistical modeling, the research finds that indigenous Chinese innovation drives agricultural productivity gains significantly, while foreign technology transfer has limited impact and often occurs through forced mechanisms rather than voluntary adoption. Economic liberalization initially boosted productivity and enabled subsequent local innovation. The findings suggest emerging economies should prioritize economic reforms to build sustainable, innovation-driven agricultural transformation.
