Responsible innovation as empowering ways of knowing

Govert Valkenburg, Annapurna Mamidipudi, Poonam Pandey, Wiebe E. Bijker · 2019 · Journal of Responsible Innovation

Summary. This paper examines responsible innovation through a case study of biogasification projects in rural India. The authors argue that inclusion in innovation governance often overlooks fundamental issues of how different groups know and understand the world. They show that exclusion happens when local communities lose control over their own knowledge and their ways of understanding are dismissed as outdated. The paper calls for responsible innovation to prioritize empowering communities' own ways of knowing.
