Financial development, technological innovation and urban-rural income gap: Time series evidence from China

Limin Wang, Xiangli Wu, Nanchen Chu · 2023 · PLoS ONE

Summary. This study examines how technological innovation and financial development affect China's urban-rural income gap from 1985 to 2019. The researchers find that technological innovation increases income inequality between urban and rural areas, while financial development shows an inverted-U relationship with the gap. The two factors have bidirectional causal relationships with income inequality. The findings suggest policymakers should strengthen financial systems and mitigate negative distributional effects of technological advancement.
