Systemic perspectives on scaling agricultural innovations. A review
Summary. Agricultural innovations often fail when scaled because current methods ignore complex interactions between biophysical, social, economic, and institutional factors. This paper proposes PROMIS, a framework combining multi-level socio-technical transition theory with modal aspects philosophy to better understand scaling dynamics. The authors demonstrate the framework's application to three cases: agro-ecological practices in Nicaragua, cocoa farmer schools in Cameroon, and green rubber cultivation in China, showing how systemic approaches can anticipate unintended consequences like environmental degradation and loss of farmer control.
