RENEWABLE ENERGY AND ITS IMPACT ON AGRICULTURAL AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT: FINDINGS OF A COMPARATIVE STUDY IN CENTRAL, EASTERN AND SOUTHERN EUROPE

Summary. Renewable energy adoption has increased across Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe, driven by rising fossil fuel prices and EU policy requirements. However, the actual impact on agricultural and rural development remains marginal. Only rapeseed cultivation and wood pellet production expanded noticeably. Rural income and employment gains are minimal so far, with future growth dependent entirely on government support policies, since renewable energy cannot yet compete economically with fossil fuels.
