Exploration and exploitation of imported technology: their effects on indigenous innovation
Summary. Foreign technology imports affect indigenous innovation in two ways: exploitation of imported technology substitutes for local R&D and creates dependency, while exploration of imported technology stimulates local innovation efforts and upgrades capacity. The study uses Chinese firm data to show that export orientation and foreign equity involvement moderate these relationships, with exploration-focused firms gaining complementary benefits rather than substitution effects.
