Brain Health and Dementia Care Services: Community-Led Innovation With and for Indigenous Peoples

Summary. Indigenous communities in the United States face higher dementia risk due to healthcare inequities, yet possess strong cultural traditions supporting brain health. This symposium presents three community-led projects that tailor dementia education and care models for Indigenous elders: one adapts a brain health curriculum for the Meskwaki Settlement in Iowa, another develops online dementia resources for Alaska Native communities, and a third implements telehealth specialty dementia services in rural Native American areas. All projects center Indigenous knowledge and community engagement to improve dementia prevention and care.
