From project to venture: facilitating engagement and entrepreneurship in rural tourism

Summary. Rural tourism projects can foster entrepreneurship by providing resources, knowledge, and community spaces, but struggle to engage key stakeholders. A three-year study of Visit Village in Sweden found that project formats clash with how small entrepreneurs and local communities actually operate. Success requires creating progression, belonging, and ownership among participants, empowering local business owners as leaders, and allowing project leaders to adapt their roles throughout implementation.
