A comparative review of major types of rural microfinance institutions in developing countries
Summary. Rural microfinance institutions take many forms, each with distinct strengths and limitations. The paper rejects the idea that one institutional model works everywhere. Instead, it argues that diverse microfinance institutions—competing and complementing each other—better serve rural populations by expanding access, improving outreach, and increasing overall welfare impact across developing countries.
